Good-bye Naughties – Worst Decade Ever
Good-bye Naughties – Worst Decade Ever
by Amelia G : December 24th, 2009
The last decade was certainly one filled with digital snake oil and the rise of wikiality over reality, tonal arguments over logical debate, and the erosion of freedom and privacy in the developed world. Many hipsters love to observe on how zombies are awesome monsters because they are weaker than their prey but make up for their shambling loserdom with numbers. So the past decade also saw the rise of people jumping up and down shouting individualist buzzwords while conforming as fast as humanly possible. And I’m not too thrilled by the economic and work ethic evolution in my circle of acquaintance, where so many people I know have gone from talking about their creative endeavors to bragging about how they are leeching money out of the “system”. But those are my complaints.
Time Magazine has their own top ten reasons . . .

Mary Portas is Absolutely Fabulous
Mary Portas is Absolutely Fabulous
by Amelia G : December 24th, 2009
Mary Queen of Shops comes from the same team which produces Gordon Ramsay’s F Word and Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, both shows about how to improve commercial kitchen work. My problem with the Gordon Ramsay shows is that I can’t watch most food television without getting insanely hungry and desperately craving whatever is being prepared. Basically, I have way too low a threshold for food porn. Mary Queen of Shops has a similar format with none of the insatiable craving for sauteed scallops in some special parsley butter sauce following viewing.
Mary Portas is a branding and retail consultant for fashion enterprises. Each episode of this show, she takes a small floundering independent boutique and helps it improve the way it does business. She is a strong advocate of fabulous service and careful market segment focus. It doesn’t even matter if one always agrees with everything she says because part of the show’s appeal is that it puts one in a business frame of mind. It makes you think about what you would do in whatever situation is being presented. Mary Portas comes across as high energy and even playful, while simultaneously being aggressive and can-do. She seems like she would be both a lot of fun and a formidable adversary.
Fascinated by her powerhouse on-screen presence and my own wish for more shows with this sort of business theme, I started casually researching her background. The best bit I found was that she got a gig as Creative Director at Harvey Nichols, after being in charge of window dressing at both Harrods and Topshop previously. At Harvey Nichols, she not only brought in cool designers like Vivienne Westwood, but she arranged for extensive product placement and name shoutouts on the TV show Absolutely Fabulous . . .

Brittany Murphy Dark Humor
Brittany Murphy Dark Humor
by Amelia G : December 23rd, 2009
TMZ in fact was updating every few minutes with stuff like UPDATE 4:07 PM ET — A rep for Murphy tells TMZ, “In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy.” They followed this up with paparazzi photos of Brittany Murphy’s grieving husband coming back home from the hospital, after his wife had been pronounced dead. Here is where it gets kind of hilarious. If you have a very very very dark sense of humor.
The stated cause of death for Brittany Murphy was cardiac arrest. Because she was a talented actress, it was common assumption, after her star turn in the meth addict movie Spun, that she was a big ol’ druggee. See Robert Downey Jr.’s performance in Less Than Zero for the classic example of this phenomenon. I think that, if I managed actors, I would tell only untalented ones to ever . . .

Jax Silver Top (PICS)
This is an image from the 17th set
forrestblack and I shot of Jax to post to the Blue Blood VIP. I know it always used to disappoint me when I'd buy like a tattoo or gothic magazine because I thought the person on the cover looked cool and then there were no pics or only maybe one picture of them inside. I think my favorite thing about creating for the web is the sheer quantity of content which can be shared.

Gasmask Flexibility (PICS)
If someone can do a cool unusual trick, I always like to photograph them doing it. Like, if they are good at hanging upside down or twisting into pretzel forms or breathing fire or hanging from hooks or whatever, then I'm down for documenting it. This set, shot by yours truly and
forrestblack posted to the Blue Blood VIP today.

Raven Sutherland Models Design by Yolanda (PICS)
I have a fondness for shooting people who do more than just model. Although, of course, being a great conversationalist or whatever doesn't mean the camera will love a person. It made it extra cool that Yolanda, whose 29th Blue Blood VIP set recently posted, designed the dress for Raven Sutherland to take off in her lucky 13th Blue Blood VIP appearance.
forrestblack and I shot this set of Raven, but she has been photographed for Blue Blood by a bunch of photographers, including Chad Michael Ward, and in multiple cities. Forrest Black and I have shot Raven in both New Orleans and Los Angeles. I haven't been to New Orleans in far too long, now that I think about it.

Preserving Memories or Amelia Ruminates Morbidly on a Funny Picture
With the passing of David Aaron Clark, I have been thinking a lot about the way photography preserves a moment. In many respects, I think my interest in photography initially stemmed largely from having moved so often and wishing I had more photos to remember people with. The reason, when I first picked up a camera, that I initially photographed freaks like me -- basically people I viewed as peers -- was that I saw it as essentially photographing the family barbecue. Only, ya know, with more varied hair color and sometimes more naked.
This shot is from a Blue Blood VIP set which posted last week. It is of Kellie LaPlegua and Szandora and is sort of a BTS outtake, although it is included in the update. I like this shot because, although I don't feel today the way I felt that day, this image helps preserve the memory.

Rachel Face Posh Skulls (PICS)
This is a shot from the sweet 16th set of Rachel Face
forrestblack and I have shot for the Blue Blood VIP. I love how uber-punk Rachel comes across in this series and the swanky boutique hotel we shot these at was so amazingly cool. Despite the fact that people from neighboring hotels complained about Rachel's appearance, our hotel was still down for sending someone to get me an iced latte when my energy started to flag. Oi oi, now that is service.

RIP David Aaron Clark
David Aaron Clark took me to my first genuine serious BDSM club.
Whether we were checking out a new K-pop singer, attending a medievalist wedding, or standing in line at a book signing, David Aaron Clark was always kind to me. He was not a self-serving fair weather friend or a hater bad weather friend; David Aaron Clark was a real friend to me.
David Aaron Clark is one of the last people still fighting the good fight who really knew me, not my digital persona, not some press, not some rumors, not the guarded self I now present to new people, but the real me. Was one of the last people, not is. Damn it.
David Aaron Clark wrote the first big feature review of Blue Blood magazine in print.
Later, Blue Blood wrote up David Aaron Clark's first video project which he directed, wrote, acted in, and literally spilled his own blood for.
David Aaron Clark was a brilliant writer. He had a knack for turning even the most mundane video review into something truly entertaining and readable. He was my labelmate at Masquerade/Rhinoceros with his novels The Wet Forever and Sister Radience and the Ritual Sex anthology he and Tristan Taormino co-edited. He and Charles Gatewood collaborated on the blood fetish book True Blood for Last Gasp. DAC was a prolific writer and his talents were seen in many venues from magazines and newspapers to screenplays. A lot of people will probably remember him for his porn video writing and directing, but he created a diverse body of work.
Things were really looking up in 2009 for David Aaron Clark. Evil Angel had actually given him the creative freedom to show some of his true artistry with the Pure movie, produced by Aiden Starr and starring Asa Akira. He used to joke that AVN created a Best Asian Feature category just so they would have an award to give him every year. I think he won for Best Screenplay too and they didn't invent that award only for him. He was a good person and would really give himself to what he made and I always felt he deserved even more recognition than what he got. David Aaron Clark always deserved an award for his creative work across multiple forms of media because of how much he put in.
David Aaron Clark and I have known each other for approximately sixteen years and ten months. He welcomed me into his home when we lived far apart and I had to travel to see him. We live so close together in Los Angeles, I wish I'd made the time to see him more. Lived so close, not live so close. With the internet, it is so easy to keep up moderate communication and, being an adult, it seems like it just gets harder and harder to make in-person time.
The last thing I said to him was the trivial thought that I wish there was going to be another season of 4400. I wish there was going to be another season of the notorious DAC.
I keep wanting to add details like how he played a non-sex role as a pirate in Joone's Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge, but I could go on all day listing cool interesting bits and pieces about his life. He lived an adventurous and interesting life, dated wild women, had unusual sex, went cool places, and left behind a significant body of work. That is more and better than a lot of people, and I know this is trite, only I wish he were still here; I feel he got taken way way too soon.
When I can stop crying for any extended period of time, I'm going to look for some photographs Forrest Black and I took of him and post them.
Rest in peace, David Aaron Clark. You are missed.

Big Boob Barbie and Country Club Biff are not the Oppressors
Big Boob Barbie and Country Club Biff are not the Oppressors
by Amelia G : November 15th, 2009
Comedian Chris Rock does a joke about how the reason women do not rule the world is because they hate each other i.e. when a man sees his buddy with a great girl, he thinks he wants one like that, and, when a woman sees her pal with a great guy, she thinks she wants that guy. Many disadvantaged groups, from Bohemians to Blacks, have to deal with some pushback from the overculture and undermining in their own culture. Black community leaders have addressed some of the issue within their community by political action, forging ahead, and coining phrases such as “hater” to describe sometime peers who seek to destroy those like them who find any success.
Counterculture community leaders deal with this cultural cannibalism by posting that they are totally going to stop tweeting on Twitter. Next time you feel like you just can’t get a break, take a look in the mirror and ask yourself when was the last time you said something supportive to or about someone in your community and when was the last . . .

Belle de Jour is Dr Brooke Magnanti
Belle de Jour is Dr Brooke Magnanti
by Amelia G : November 15th, 2009
Around this time last year, Belle wrote in her blog, “What I write about is something every depiction of prostitution in this country in recent years has not been permitted to say. There will be no comeuppance. There will be no guilt and shame. And most importantly, there will be no white goddamn knight . . . Myself, personally, I am enjoying life. Neither in spite of nor because of my past but because I choose to . . . because no one else wants to say these things, I can: I will. I am unrepentant. I make no apologies for my past or what I write. And my future will be no worse than yours as a result.”
It will be sociologically interesting to see how outing herself pans out for her future. So far, people’s reactions seem mixed. Because here is the kicker: Belle de Jour is a research scientist who specializes in the impact of pesticides on children, such as exotic cancers. So the people who were hoping best-selling author and high end escort Belle was pathetic in her real life are disappointed. And the part-time sex workers who hand themselves a blue ribbon and an award for having got through a few months of college are feeling a bit inadequate. There are exceptions, but a lot of the press on Dr. Brooke Magnanti seems sort of hostile, like they either have to refer to her research science as obscure or her sexual past as very very naughty.
My response: How fucking cool is it that someone could be hot enough to charge three hundred pounds an hour via Barbarella’s escort agency as a young woman and go on to be both a witty best-selling author and work on science to help sick children?! That is like female Buckeroo Banzai . . .

Do you believe alien abductions really happen?
Do you believe alien abductions really happen?
by Amelia G : October 22nd, 2009
Olatunde Osunsanmi directs the beautiful Milla Jovovich in The Fourth Kind. Close Encounters was the third kind i.e. contact with extraterrestrials. The Fourth Kind is alien abduction. Apparently, there is a part of Alaska which has had an unusually high number of missing persons and an unusually high number of otherwise credible people who appear to truly believe they have been the victims of alien abductions.
The movie is part documentary and part reenactment, juxtaposing videotapes psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler made of patients with reenactments by Milla Jovovich. I may have a stronger opinion one way or the other, after seeing the movie, but I’m personally on the fence on what to think about alien life forms performing experiments on humans.
By the way, according to the alien interaction scale, the second kind is collecting evidence of aliens and the first kind is just sighting a UFO.
Perhaps Kids in the Hall can offer some insight:
Alien 1: So what’s bothering you?
Alien 2: Ah, lately I just keep wondering what’s the point?
Alien 1: The point?
Alien 2: Yeah. What’s the point of what we do?
Alien 1: Sorry, I don’t follow you
Alien 2: Well, I mean, we travel 250,000 light years across the universe, abduct humans, probe them anally and release them.
Alien 1: Yeah? And?
Alien 2: Well, doesn’t it seem kind of pointless?
Alien 1: I really don’t think about it.
Alien 2: Well don’t you think you should?
Alien 1: No, I don’t think I should. I don’t think I should question the . . .

Nina Sin Satan Cheerleader
How awesome is it that Nina Sin has a cheerleader outfit like this!? Forrest Black and I knew we were going to shoot her in this outfit the moment we saw it. The only hard part was for all of us to stop suggesting cheers for Satan, so we would not be giggling through the shots. Full set posted to Blue Blood VIP today.
